We are going camping this coming weekend (Memorial Day weekend), it's a bit early for tent camping in Vermont---but we are die hard campers.

I am taking a teenage daughter of one of my friends with us. She called the other night to ask me what she should pack for clothes. It is so hard to explain. I told her lots of layers---especially for night time because it will be in high 30's to low 40's.

How do you dress when you are going camping? Do you over pack? Bring to many clothes?

Yes I do over pack. I would rather have clothes that I do not need rather than need clothes I do not have.

I tend to over pack as well, though it has been of major benefit several times. I won't get on the bandwagon that cotton kills, as not wearing any cotton puts a real crimp in the wardrobe options. I'd suggest 3 sets of blends (I use Dickies work pants and shirts [with belt & suspenders lol]), with silk or poly insulated underwear (unless it is mid summer w/temps in the 80's and up I take at least one pair). At least three levels of jacket. A light windbreaker, a medium jacket, and a coat appropriate for the worst weather in the area. A pair of jersey gloves and a pair of insulated gloves. A sweater is nice many cases, a pair of shorts only if you are a fanatic about them (I feel vulnerable in shorts, especially if away from camp). A pair of overpants (ski pants) in case the weather takes a real turn for the worst. Good hiking boots, or at least high top athletic shoes. Three sets underwear. Several extra pairs of socks. A wide brimmed (cool looking!) hat and a pair of UVA/UVB stopper sunglasses.

Wow Jerry! And I thought I over packed..LOL

I usually bring a couple of every thing when it comes to jackets or hoodies. I am afraid I will get wet somehow and then be cold because I have nothing else to wear. In the summer I really like to go barefoot and wear shorts. I know--in the woods it isn't that smart, but I hate shoes. I use tons and tons of bug and tick spray. :)

We are going camping in a couple days--you better believe I will have some warm cloths. It is a bit early for camping where we go--but we are going to try it.

I can say that we did not freeze when we went camping. We had one cold night but everybody had layers of clothes on. I actually made the mistake of going to bed with to many clothes on and started to sweat in my sleep. Then I was cold to the bone because I of the sweat.

All in all, I am happy to say that I have trained my kids how to pack in the woods. We have actually gone camping 3 other times since Memorial Day and have had a great time. We even got rained on a couple times. No big deal to us--we survive. :)

Sounds like your family has it down pretty well. I tend to go on more day trips than overnight trips, so I pack much differently. Mainly because I hate to have to lump around extra weight when I'm hiking. Though I do bring some minimal extras like an extra pair of undies and socks.
