Anyone here have chickens at their place? I've been doing some reading, and was wondering how much it typically costs to heat the coop in the winter. I live in WY, so the temps can get in the negatives fairly often. Thanks for any input!

A 100 watt bulb burning for 360 hours/month uses about $4/month of energy. It's nothing to get excited or worried about.

Seems like the feed costs would be a bigger concern. I do know that you need about 10 hens or so to get a good return on invested feed. A hen will lay roughly .75 times per day, so figure that into your hen calculations.

People need to adjust a bit, though, when it comes to eggs.
I haven't seen any "natural" chickens lay those behemoth eggs I see in the grocery store, have you?
People might think their chickens are no good when they see the little eggs they lay!
