The best and simplest method of purifying water is by: boiling the water to about 20 minutes and then another way is by using alum.

In cases where a contaminant cannot be readily measured, such as particular microbiological organisms that can sicken humans, water supplies must provide specific treatment, such as disinfection and filtration, to ensure safe water.SO, IT IS ALWAYS VERY SAFE TO DRINK BOILED WATER.

Boiling is the best way to purify water, And I don't think there is any other method stronger than this one.

Boiling water kills any microbes in the water, but it does not take out other unsavory additions like harmful organic material and toxins and pollutants the seep in. I would suggest using either a reverse osmosis system or just a simple refrigerator water filter.

Hi Dave. There are bottle and pitcher filters that you can find for less than $70 bucks which filter out 99% of contaminants. Check the site in my signature... there is good information and some comparisons there.

Also, boiling water can serve to concentrate certain contaminants in water... it is best to use a filter.

I was totally going to post this, I'm happy I read to the end. The replacement filters are $20 each, and they last roughly a year. Before I saw this, I was hell bent on buying a Berkey. I'm so happy I found this. :)

I plan on purchasing the CTD system as a back-up. However, I also still plan on the Berkey system, since it also can filter some metals and fluoride from municipal water supplies. One thing that's great about all the different water purification systems out there is that they filter and/or kill bacteria. However, most of them don't even come close to dealing with chemical or industrial contaminants. I absolutely do not want fluoride in my water. The Berkey add-on filters will do it...
