What's the best way to counter-act pepper spray, OC spray, or CS gas? Let's assume that the SHTF, and you're navigating through a riotting crowd when you are CS'd by the police. What is the best way to counter-act the irritants in the spray?

As far as I know, you are limited to washing your face, after exposure, as basic relief.

If you have a feeling that you are going to be caught in that situation, I think it would be wise to have a gas mask or filter mask with you.

The only way I know is only minimally effective. You can pour fresh water over your face to dilute it and wash most of it away. However you cannot get rid of all of it, and will suffer mild effects for a while after. This is what we were instructed to do by the drill Sergeants when i went through boot camp.

Another tip is to breathe in short, deep breaths. You can also tear up more (pinch your nose painfully, works for me when I'm pulling nose hairs), which will help wash the CS gas or whatever off, if you don't have water handy.

How long does it last?

Here's an interesting article on CS gas:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CS_gas

According to this:
CS contamination can be removed by washing with an alkaline solution of water and 5% sodium bisulfite.[5] A quick way to decontaminate the eyes is to pour cow's milk into them. Vision will be restored although breathing difficulties and pain will persist.

So, some milk poured into the eyes can help. Interesting!

I'll put that on my list of stuff that I hope I don't have to deal with! Sounds like some pretty nasty stuff.

I agree with DianaR about what she said of the pepper spray . I have mine for almost 2 years.

We all have the same answer lady69, the best relief is water, running water. If you feel like you can't breath, you should go to a nearby hospital because it could be an allergic reaction. To be prepared, why don't you wear a gas mask before doing it.
Thanks. :D

im a cop who trains other cops on chemical munitions. for cs gas, commonly used in riot control, the best thing you can do is to get away from the contamination source and get to clear air. while in the area of the gas take short and shallow breaths. for oc or pepper spray, you will need to do the same thing for a gas exposure. if you are exposed to the 'wet' pepper spray it will burn you skin. if you get it in your eyes it will likely be VERY painful. you will want to flush your eyes with clean water. if you have it, take baby shampoo and pull your eye lids open and put the baby shampoo directly into your eyes and blink. this will help wash out the particles from the pepper spray. you can expect the effects of pepper spray to last from 15 minutes to over an hour depending on the exposure and the person. a lucky 10% or so of the population has limited reaction to pepper spray.

the best thing you can do is to avoid the exposure all together. hope that helps
