The Duracell ones work nice. A buddy of mine has one and I really think the work better than the cheaper wind up lights.

The only downside on the one that I have is the light output- it is maybe 10 lumens. Bright enough to use to find a bigger flashlight, basically.

Check out INOVA brand flashlights, I have a T-2, T-5, and their 24-7 . Their lights are comparable to the Surefire
without the high cost.

Thanks for the info. I've been wanting to get a Surefire but also not wanting to spend the $$ for one. These lights look like they might be a nice alternative. I checked a few of them out online and it looks like the T2 has a decent battery life, but it's not all that much cheaper than a Surefire. The INOVA site was selling the T2 for $76 while I can get a Surefire 6P LED for $89 from the Surefire site with almost double the battery life.

I was going to say that I'm looking for advice on the best flashlight and battery for infrequent use. I'm really looking for something that is not very expensive but that is reliable, especially when it's not used that often. I'm amending this query to include anything that can be a portable light source but that is very ease to use and store, but that when the lights go out, or when stuck in the car, it's going to work, even if it hasn't in a long time.

Recommendations?

I was looking for a similar thing. I was looking for a flashlight that had a hand crank and was also solar powered. Also, being waterproof would be a nice bonus. I've found 2 flashlights that would be perfect for a survival kit.

The first is a SolaDyne flashlight. 3 LEDs, hank crank, solar powered, waterproof and has a flashing mode. It currently costs $17 on Amazon.

The other is the Eton Scorpion. It is also 3 LEDs, hank crank and solar powered. It's water resistant (not waterproof), but also is a radio (AM/FM/NOAA Weather band) and a USB Cell phone charger. It's about the same size as the SolaDyne flashlight, but thicker and heavier. It's currently selling for about $49 on Amazon.

i ended up getting both of these flashlights. :)
