I think excessive use of microwave appliances does cause a significant amount of radiation effects. Although we can tolerate most of the dose of radiations coming out of it.

However there is a concern over the long term effects of microwave objects on health especially the carcinogenic ones. Do you think microwave products are much dangerous than expected.

I don't think microwave ovens are dangerous. The magnetrons used in ovens are very weak and all they do is excite the moisture in the food you are heating which warms it up.

The high power magnetrons are used for RADAR. These are mounted on ships, at airports and in aircraft. If they were causing problems we would have heard about high cancer rates from people who are on ships, fly airplanes, and live near airports.

Over 90% of American homes have microwave ovens used for meal preparation. Because microwave ovens are so convenient and energy efficient, as compared to conventional ovens, very few homes or restaurants are without them. In general, people believe that whatever a microwave oven does to foods cooked in it doesn't have any negative effect on either the food or them.

Of course, if microwave ovens were really harmful, governments would never allow them on the market, would they? Would they?

When speaking of Radiation one must speak of Electromagnetic Waves.

Here is a spectrum showing the frequency of the Electromagnetic waves we are around everyday.

http://www1.sura.org/2000/SURA_Electromagnetic_Spectrum_Full_Chart.jpg

Now to the left are the longest waves (Radio waves). Electromagnetic waves need an antenna of at least half the wave length to properly be recieved. As the waves freqency increases the antenna can be shorter.

In the middle you will see (visible light) the frequency at which the rods and cones in our eyes are excited and send signals to our brains so that you can read this Thread.

To the right you will notice the Ultraviolet that can disrupt skin cells and cause skin cancer.
Farther to the right you will notice the radiation that can pass through the body without being absorbed by the cells however continued exposure does get partially absorbed and can destroy cells.

Now back to the microwave. Your microwave has metallic screens that will not allow these waves to leave the designed (Farady Cage)

If your microwave runs with the door open ..... I would be worried.

Bill E Bob is correct on this.

The only danger with microwaves is to people who have pace makers installed to regulate their heartbeat. The pace maker is regulated by electric pulses from the heart muscle. The wavelength of these pulses is normally harmless. Microwave ovens also emit some pulses in this frequency that can interfere with the pace makers ability to detect these pulses, which can cause the heart to stop beating. This is very rare and only happens in a very small amount of cases, but it is still better to have a person with a pace maker in a different room when the microwave is in use.

Even if my microwave carries a few risks, I don't want to use an oven that costs more on my power bill.

Life is full of risks.

Embrace those with benefits.

How is your computer powered? Microwave ovens are actually very efficient in energy transfer. Unless your cooking daily on a log stove using wood from your own ground this low energy/high efficiency device is realtively cheap. If you have a solar panel or wind energy - the microwave is the way to go.

I don't anticipate bake ovens are dangerous. The magnetrons acclimated in ovens are actual anemic and all they do is accelerate the damp in the aliment you are heating which warms it up...
