I need some help on this........ in the beggining of his speech Obama said something like.... "I am the 44th .........American.......to become president of this country".......now then, it is my understanding that the first three presidents were not Americans but British or born in England, am I right on this or what???

Define American. Back then, you were considered an American just as an immigrant is considered an American today- you are a citizen. I think that was a tounge-in-cheek moment for Obama, to refute criticism about his birth certificate.

Ponce, I think he was just referring to American as being a citizen. There wasn't always a naturalized citizen requirement to the presidency.

As far as I know you are supposed to be born in the US of A, or born in US territory, or army post, a US plane or ship or embassy.......very confusing.
Anyway, I was refering to Obama saying "Americans" when the first three were British.

Every president, including the first three were born in what became the USA. Therefore they would meet the natural born criteria in the Constitution. The Constitution was written before Washington became President. from the end of the Revolutionary War until Washington and the other representatives took office the Country was loosely governed under the Articles of Confederation, which did not work well. IIRC our present form of government began in 1787.
