I have found a way to turn kitchen scraps into great compost in a matter of days rather than months. It boils down to surface area & extra beneficial bacteria. It takes a few extra minutes, but I am getting rich, black compost in under a week this way.
I toss my leftover kitchen scraps into a blender to increase the surface area for fast breakdown. However, if I do this alone I end up with a fuzzy mess of mold that looks like Don King's hair. So I add probiotics. I do use compost starter, though I prefer a probiotic product from Home Depot that has gotten great results:

The blending makes a liquid, so I add a base fiber for it to cling to. I like Coir bricks since they are basically fluffy and allow good air flow. I recommend this one, since it includes a lot of additional nutrients and is affordable:

Otherwise I dump it into my turnable composter, and that works incredibly fast. I turn it about twice a week. The only thing to watch out for is to be sure to cover it- I even cover my composter with burlap, or else you will have a Fly Factory in your backyard.I dug out hundreds of larvae in clumps one days- ew! I do not have that issue as long as I cover it with burlap (it still needs to allow for airflow in order to break down the scraps.)
This will save you a great amount if you buy dirt, gives you living, healthy compost, turns garbage into resource in days, and gets you a skill now that you will need later. All in all, it's great stuff!
I would love to hear any feedback you may have!
